Track your competitors while you sleep

This agent watches your competitors. Every Monday it researches what they shipped, what they changed, and anything else you should know, then emails you a digest.

What you need

  • An Agenta account. Agenta Cloud is the quickest way to start.
  • A Gmail account, to receive the digest.

Step 1: Describe the agent

Open a new agent. The playground shows the agent's configuration on the left and the chat on the right.

Describe the job in the chat:

I want to build an agent that creates a weekly digest about my competitors,
with information about new features, funding, and anything relevant that I
should know. To get started, go to our website and try to figure out what we
do and who our competitors are.

Before you send it, open Permissions and set the policy to Allow all. The agent then runs its tools without asking you each time. This is safe here because the agent has no access to any app yet. To learn more, see Control what an agent can do.

Step 2: Let the agent research your market

The agent reads its context and asks for your company website. Enter it and accept.

The agent opens your website, works out what you do, and lists your competitors. It also proposes what to track for each one: launches, funding, pricing, integrations, partnerships, positioning, and notable customer wins. If the list looks right, confirm it.

The agent then asks you to connect a web search tool, Composio Search, so it can find news about your competitors. Connect it.

Next, it asks when the digest should run. Answer in plain words:

I want to have it each week on Monday at 10:00 in Berlin time.

Step 3: Read and edit the instructions

While the agent works, look at its configuration. An agent has a model, which it runs on, and instructions. The instructions are the most important part: they tell the agent what its job is.

Everything you chat about changes the agent's own configuration. You told it that it is now a competitor analysis agent, so it updates its instructions, adds the tools it needs, and adds a schedule.

Open Instructions to read what it wrote. It starts with something like You are the weekly competitor-intelligence agent for Agenta and lists what to research on every run.

You have full visibility into what the agent will do, and you can change it. For example, if you do not care about funding rounds, add a line:

Ignore any funding information. Focus on product features.

Click Commit to save the change as a new version. The agent uses the new instructions from now on.

To learn more, see Write your agent's instructions.

Step 4: Check the schedule

The agent also added a schedule. Open it under Schedules. Every Monday it sends the agent a message, Prepare this week's concise competitor intelligence digest, and the agent does the research.

note

Schedules run in UTC, so the agent converts the time you asked for. 10:00 in Berlin is 08:00 UTC in summer and 09:00 UTC in winter. The schedule does not change for daylight saving time.

Step 5: Send the digest by email

So far, each run creates a new chat with the digest. To get it by email instead, add Gmail. Go to Tools, click +, choose a third-party integration, and select Gmail. If Gmail is not connected yet, click Connect an account first.

Then ask the agent:

Please send this digest by email each time after you write it.

The agent asks for your email address, adds the Gmail tool it needs to send email, and updates its instructions: when the digest is complete, send it to your email.

The permission policy is still Allow all, so the agent now sends email without asking you. To approve each email before it is sent, open the Gmail integration and set its permission to Ask for write and delete. A scheduled run then waits for your approval before it sends the digest. To learn more, see Control what an agent can do.

Step 6: Test it without waiting for Monday

You do not have to wait until Monday to see if it works. In Schedules, click the ⋯ menu next to the schedule and choose Run in playground.

This simulates a full run. The message that is normally sent on Monday is sent now, and the agent does all the research.

When it finishes, the digest arrives in your inbox. You will get one every week.
